This study is a “literature study on Ars moriendi (the Art of dying) in the late Middle Ages, Luther’s reformation, and the critical acceptance of Protestant modernity,” which starts as an afterthought of my preceding work, “Ars moriendi in the late Middle Ages and Luther’s Reformation.” Modern ars moriendi literature began to develop not only in Catholicism but also in Protestantism after the Reformation. In addition, Johann Arndt’s Geistliche Seelen-Arznei, which considered the origin of German pietism in the 17th century, is an important text for exploring Lutheran piety after the Reformation. Seventeenth-century German pietism is characterized by a theology and doctrine that inherited the legacy of the Reformation, but this religious movement critically embraced the styles and forms of late medieval piety, a trait that is also present in Arndt’s ars moriendi piety. Arndt’s emphasis on repentance for one’s life lived with sin, awareness of one’s mortality, and comfort and healing through prayer and contemplation is also a characteristic of late medieval piety.
