Neon Genesis Evangelion, which aired 26 episodes from October 4, 1995, to March 27, 1996, is a TV anime that directly addresses issues of loneliness, human alienation, anxiety, and growth, which were prevalent among the youth in Japan in the 1990s. The series triggered the third anime boom, spawned numerous Evangelion otaku, and had a significant impact on Japanese society. Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death and Rebirth was released on March 15, 1997, and The End of Evangelion on July 19, 1997 in order to replace the uncertain conclusion of the TV series.
This study examines the postmodern setting and the phenomenon of family dissolution in Neon Genesis Evangelion, and then scrutinizes the representations of “father” and “mother” in Japanese culture. Specifically, the signification of the differences between the 25th and 26th episodes of the TV series and the movie version, The End of Evangelion, is explored. The discussion confirms that Neon Genesis Evangelion reflects the conceptual disintegration of the “modern family” in 1990s Japanese society. While the conclusion of the TV series stays within the narrative that reiterates the patriarchal modern family tradition, the film version clearly shows an era in which both the symbol of the mother and the father have become meaningless.
