This studyaims to examine Japanese intellectuals’ colonial tour records published in the Taisho period travel collection “SinnihonKenbutsu: Taiwan, Karafuto, Joseon, Manchuria andQingdao” (1918). TheTaisho periodwas a newera during which the Meiji era—which achieved successful results of war victory and territorial expansion—ended and the new order and civilization were centered on the country’s economic stability. Fromthe Taisho period to the mid Showa era’s wartime period, many travel guides and records introducing“outside Japan” were published. This study aims to discuss howcolonial utopian fantasies and ideologies were implemented in various colonial spaces. Recalling the utopian concept that Japan has drawn, it seeks to grasp how colonial space as a heterotopia of the Taisho era is implemented through travel documents. Heterotopia, a world that is different fromthe one you live in, is a space where you have completely different experiences and consciousness. Fromthis perspective, the colonial territoryseenbymodern Japanese intellectuals during the Taisho period functions as a real utopia or heterotopia. By reading new travel guides, this study attempts to understand Joseon, which had only beenviewed fromthe fragmentaryperspective of the ruled country, as a newspace with multi-layered and complex aspects.
