This paper analyzes the process of encountering the past and healing wounds using the keywords “Memory”and “Empathy”, which were the primary characteristics of the events depicted in Makoto Shinkai’s new animated film, “Suzume”. Among the aforementioned events, the damage caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 was significant; however, the situation turned dire due to the unexpected nuclear power plant accident, the effects of which continue to this day. The Great East Japan Earthquake still remains a sensitive subject. However, through “Suzume” director Makoto Shinkai tackles “remembering” by depicting the incident in detail. In this paper, I research “Memory” and “Empathy” using the story of “Suzume” and analyze the process of encountering the past and healing. In addition, using “Memory” and “Empathy”, I consider the possibility of reconciliation and solidarity regarding past wounds in East Asia.
