This paper aims to clarify the prototype model of mimetic words that express the softness of Japanese and Korean. In this paper, we clarify the central and peripheral meanings of each soft mimetic word. Based on these results and prototype effects, we derive a prototype model. As a result of the study in Japanese, we have determined that the mimetic words associated with the specified conditions are “hukahuka” of the CVCV type and “hunwari” of the CVQCVRa/Ri type. We conclude that “malrang” is the most prototypical mimetic word in Korean that satisfies the above conditions and produces prototypical effects. Throughout both languages, soft mimetic words lacked the element of sound symbolism (S), implying that there was no direct connection between softness and sound generation.
