This article clarifies Luciano Floridi's information ethics (IE) and through critical consideration, seeks the possibility of an ethical theory appropriate for the information society. IE based on Floridi's philosophy of information is designed to solve ethical problems that arise in the information society. This is because ethical problems in the information society are difficult to solve with existing ethical theories. Today, actors as non-human beings have a moral impact on the environment, and humans constitute an ethical world in relationships with various others. In this situation, ethics such as virtue ethics, deontology, and utilitarianism, have various limitations, making it difficult to solve ethical problems arising from new relationships. Accordingly, Floridi proposes IE as ontocentric, and patient-oriented macroethics defines new moral agents and moral objects and forms a new ethical world. In an information society, all realities appear as information and an information process, and thus any realities as informational beings are understood to have minimal intrinsic value. In this sense, all realities have an equal moral status and all beings become members of the ethical world. In this ethical world, humans, who are moral agents and objects at the same time, have a duty of respect and care to preserve and flourish the infosphere composed of informational beings.
However, IE is mainly faced with the following criticisms. First, a naturalistic fallacy arises from the ontocentric perspective of IE. Second, there is a problem of how it is possible to compare all objects with intrinsic value and how to assign intrinsic value to informational objects from a patient-oriented point of view. Third, there is a problem of how respect and care can be justified from the actor’s point of view. The purpose of this paper is to review this critical view of IE and to find a way for IE to become a promising theory for future society.
