Despite the large number of studies on how immoral behaviour arises in Kant, there are very few studies on “natural dialectic” (die natürliche Dialektik) and “rationalization” (das Vernünfteln), which are presented in the first section of Groundwork explaining the occurrence of moral evil. Against this background, the aim of this paper is to reconstruct Kant's theory of moral evil through the concept of “rationalizing” by analyzing the concept of “das Vernünfteln” in the context of “die natürliche Dialektik”.
The immoral, self-deceptive rationalization is the sophisticated reasoning against the imperatives of morality when the imperatives of morality appear to interfere with the agent's pursuit of happiness. The rationalizer makes excuses that the moral law allows for exceptions, or that an action can be moral if it is motivated by one's own happiness in addition to the motivation of duty. This process occurs through self-deceptive rationalizing, by producing the illusion (Schein) that a system of rules that has the principle of one’s own happiness as its supreme rule can also be a principle of morality. By rationalizing, the rational agent gives a coherent form structurally like that of the moral law, but with a different motive at its base: not respect for the law, but self-love or one’s own happiness.
