Financial information is significant in enabling information users to make rational decisions.
Therefore, this study aims to determine whether managers of the target company in the same industry utilize financial information from other companies within the industry when making decisions. Research and development (R&D) investment is an important factor in evaluating the value of a company for capital market participants and external stakeholders. R&D investment can sometimes lead to investment competition among companies or, conversely, result in underinvestment for short-term performance. Given that R&D investment, which can affect both short-term and long-term company value, is determined by managers considering various factors, it is natural for managers to be interested in the investment activities of other companies in the same industry. To investigate this, we examined whether cash outflows resulting from the investment activities of other companies in the same industry affect the R&D expenses of the target company. Additionally, we analyzed whether the impact of such investment activities on the decision-making of the target company differs based on the magnitude of comparability between the two companies.
To establish a more accurate relationship between the two companies, we utilized firm-pair-year data instead of traditional panel data. The results are as follows: First, it was found that the financial information of other companies in the same industry influences the investment decision-making of managers in the target company. Specifically, it was observed that the financial information of other companies reduces the R&D expenses of the target company. Second, as the comparability between the target company and other companies increases, the information transfer effect becomes more significant. Therefore, when managers make decisions regarding R&D investment, it implies that they utilize the financial information of other companies in the same industry. Furthermore, we confirmed that this effect only occurs when the size of the other company's investment activity within the same industry is larger than the size of the target company. Thus, this study provides stronger support for its hypothesis. Conversely, it was found that there is no significant effect when the size of the target company is larger than the size of the comparative company.
R&D expense varies in scale each year, and financial information regarding this is difficult for investors to interpret unless they are experts in handling such information. Therefore, at this point, where an increase in the explanatory power of R&D expenses is demanded, verifying the information transfer effect between cash outflows resulting from the investment activities of other companies and R&D expenses of the target company can contribute to accurate company valuation and appropriate investment among market participants, ultimately facilitating the efficient allocation of social capital. Additionally, conducting research on the specific financial information of R&D expenses, rather than focusing solely on corporate disclosure, can increase the explanatory power of corporate activities. Lastly, by utilizing the specific comparability between the target company and other companies, we were able to determine the impact of comparability on the information transfer effect more accurately compared to using average comparability within the industry as used in previous studies.
