“Kōseiki” is a novel written by Haruo Satō and serialized in “Fukuoka Nichinichi Newspaper” from May to October 1929. The novel is considered Japan’s first feature novel based on psychoanalysis. The story revolves around the Professor of Psychiatry, Inomata, who explores the underlying causes of hysteria with the help of medical student Oba, his sister Tokiko, and the detective Sudo brothers. As the founder of psychoanalysis, he incorporates not only Freud’s well-known theory in hysterical research but also Kleperin’s theory of psychopathology. This thesis considers existing theories on how medical knowledge about hysteria is reflected in the novel. The examination will focus on how the story unfolds and evolves when hysteria, in its medical sense, is utilized as the work’s central theme.
