This paper focused on Sung Dae-jung, Seong Hae-eung, Park Jong-sun, and Lee Ki-won, who participated in Kyujanggak and were active during late 18th century, examining the socio-economic impact of their social status(Seo-ul 庶孼) and diversity of their literary tendencies.
Sung Dae-jung, who was ordained the highest rank among the late Joseon seo-uls, participated in the Court for about 40 years and passionately recorded political, social, and institutional irregularities and sought solutions with attempts to be a great governor. While serving as Geomseogwan, Seong Hae-eung improved his capabilities by editing and revising national publications or interacting with the best intellectuals of the time. As a result he left a vast amount of writings. His focus was to leave records of the unnoticed among the world, which also comes from his identity as social leader. Lee Ki-won gave up his National Exam due to poverty and was not able to participate in administration until he was around 40s, and the final position was a sixth-class officer. In other words, his path represents what wealthless Seo-ul literati would end up with. Therefore, his poems are mainly composed of lamentation and sorrow from a weary life. Park Jong-sun is seoja(庶子) of Park Myeong-won, son-in-law of King Yeongjo. He did not have a chance to express his thoughts due to social restrictions, but thanks to less ups and downs of his wealthy household he did not suffer much. It is known that his such situation made his poetry tough and have ruggedness by using difficult transcripts, unusual phrases and original expressions.
In short, these four people are seo-ul, but each has a different socio-economic situation and the literary world is also diverse. Through the examination in this paper, it will be helpful to broaden the field of Sino-Korean literature authors and seo-ul literature in the late Joseon Dynasty, and furthermore reorganize the composition of rather one-sided Seo-ul literature.
