Kim Il-sung, when first appeared in 1945, was a puzzle. Most of all, his personal appearance as a young, simple, cheerful man was out of chord from that of an old veteran warrior. Therefore proving him as a real, not fake, anti-Japanese hero became the first task for those who shaped the leader’s public image during the Liberation period. One way of doing it was to consolidate his status as Stalin’s legitimate successor. As Stalin was considered Lenin’s embodiment, Kim Il-sung had to be Stalin’s embodiment, their respective image being in exact similitude. Given the situation, this article focuses on the Sun-rhetoric as a linguistic device which heavily adorned and empowered both leaders’ personality cult. It traces how ‘Kim Il-sung the Sun’ figure, modeled on the formula and the logic of ‘Stalin the Sun,’ played an important role as a way to justify Kim’s shaky identity, and at the same time, to express North Korea’s pro-Stalin/Soviet ideology. However, one should remember, the logic of legacy soon conceded its way to the logic of Juche, which acknowledged Kim Il-sung as one and only Sun for the people, making it shine not simply as a mythological trope but as an actual source of authority.
