Kyrgyzstan is notorious for its bride kidnapping (Ala-kachuu). Contrary to popular belief, the current form of bride kidnapping is not an old tradition of nomadic society. This practice, which was extremely rare before the Soviet Union, gradually increased from 1970s, and exploded during the transition period. The economic background of kidnapping marriages is the bride price (kalym), and the downward rigidity of the bride price is an essential cause of disturbance in the marriage market. Due to the decline of the Soviet economy and the rise of the private economy, the actual value of women’s labor rose, and the kalym was also raised due to the emergence of a new class with purchasing power due to economic stratification. Even in the economic recession during the transition period, Kalym showed a weird downward rigidity, which led to the kidnapping of brides by poor young guys. At the same time, the state failed to exercise the administrative power to prevent abductions, and the strengthened Islamic norms created a “virginity trap” and blocked the return of kidnapped girls. This study presents a complete socioeconomic explanation of the origin, evolution, and prospect of bride kidnapping by integrating the results of field investigations in southern Kyrgyzstan and existing literature and statistical data.
