This paper aims to investigate the motivation of the /n/ appearance. In the historical development of Middle Korean verbal stem ‘ac-(sit), jəc-(put upon)’ > ‘anc-, jəc-’ /n/ was appeared before /c, ch/. If the first head syllable of a prosodic word ‘acʌni, jəcʌni’ was phonetically fortified, this changed to 'ancʌni, jəncʌni' by inserting a mora to the latter half demisyllable of this word initial syllable. Because the phonetically fortified head syllable of a prosodic word was required to have two moras. In order to satisfy this requirement a moraic consonant /n/ was enforcedly to insert. In this case /n/ had been appeared by splitting an underlying ‘c, ch’ in the following adjacent syllable.
“Within the splitting theory an epenthetic consonant(/n/) is a segment in the syllable margin that corresponds to a split input segment(/c, ch/). The quality of epenthetic segments is regulatedby the regular Input-Output faithfulness constraints in competition with markedness constraints. Splitting an input segmentis penalized by IO-INTEGRITY. The epenthetic segments are required to be as similar as possible to their input by IO-IDENT constraints”(Staroverov 2014).
In response to the high ranked FORTITION-TO-WEIGHT which required to have two moras, this syllable was experienced in the splitting a margin /c, ch/ in the fortified syllable. Among the candidates /n/ had moraic quality and was the most faithful to the input. Since that most optimal form /n/ was selected, ‘an-cʌni, jən-cʌni’ were restructured to ‘anc-ʌni, jənc-ʌni’ by the hearer(language learner)'s metanalysis. Eventually the MK verbalstem ‘ac-, jəc-’ has changed to the Modern Korean form ‘anc-, jənc-’.
