Ilyeon refers to Tamchambeop and Bakchambeop, quoting “Dangseungjeon”, while explaining Jinpyo’s Mangshincham in “JinpyoJeongan” Jo in “Samgu kyusa”. Tamchambeop is based on “Jeomchalgyeong”, and it is said that two pieces of Cheop are thrown to predict good and evil and that “Jeomchalgyeong” does not mention Tamchambeop of Haengbeop like this. Nevertheless, scholars accept the records of “Dangseungjeon” and Ilyeon about Tamchambeop without any review. This demonstrates that the research on Tamchambeop is not carried out appropriately. Tamchambeop studies abroad are no exception.
To address these problems, I reviewed Tamchambeop through reading the Sutras, and this confirms that it is closely related to Chambeop described in “Bulseolgwanbulsamaehaegyeong.” In Donggyeong, Tamchambeop was Cham beop, where the confessor entered the pagoda and looked at Baekho enshrined in the Buddhist statue, performing Ochetuji, and had to witness the Seosang shining light from Baekho. In other words, Iptap and Ochetuji are the main activities of Chambeop However, Seondo (613~681) wrote “GwannyeomAmitabhaHaesamaegongde okbeopmun”, describing Tamchambeop, which is more complex than Haengbeop in the context of “Gwanbulsamaehaegyeong,” and presents Gwangmyeong’s Seosang and the period of repentance in more detail. This is considered to be related to the Jabakbeop of Chinese Taoism at the time. Jabakbeop of Taoism is the treatment of disease or the repentance of one’s faults through Godu activity. Such a background was enough to accommodate the Ochetuji of Buddhism with the same concept.
On the other hand, Jinpyo’s mentor, Sungje, told Jinpyo to conduct Mangshincham for Jaseosugye. Since Sungje disciplined himself under Seondo, it is easy to regard Jinpyo’s Mangshincham as Seondo’s influence. However, the intense Ochetuji Chambeop, such as the breaking of hands and feet and the bleeding, is seen in “Seokjeongtogunuiron”, written by his disciple Hoegam, rather than Seondo. Therefore, the intense Mangshincham performed by Jinpyo cannot rule out the influence of Hoegam as well as Seondo.
Jinpyo’s Mangshincham was succeeded by Yeongshim of Sokrisan and Donghwasa along with Jeomchalbeophoe.
