ABSTRACT Difficulties and Changes of Chinese Immigrant Mothers and their Children who Participated in Bilingual Education Support Lee, Seung-Suk(Sungshin Women's University) Bae, Ji-Hi(Sungshin Women's University) The purpose of this study was to investigate difficulties and changes of Chinese immigrant mothers and their children who participated in bilingual education support.
In-depth interviews and participant observations were carried out with four Korean-Chinese multicultural families having bilingual education support. The results indicate that Chinese immigrant mothers showed lack of information on bilingual education for their children and experienced difficulties due to their negative perceptions toward using mother’s language with their children. The mothers also reported that children began to use more Korean and less Chinese as they entered kindergarten, which made it even more difficult for them to encourage bilingualism.
Mothers of Korean-Chinese multicultural families became more competent in communicating with their children using both Korean and Chinese after participation in bilingual education support in this study. They also became more convinced about the importance of bilingual education. The children developed positive attitude toward bilingualism and became more interested in using both Korean and Chinese. Bilingual education support provided for the families participating in this study also helped the children establish their identity in two cultures.
