The primary purpose of this study is to investigate how the community service in school curriculum is organized and implemented in practice; seeking how to enhance the educative function of community service. To achieve this goal, making use of service learning as a theoretical framework, this study examines interview and survey data collected from teachers and students in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon. Major findings indicate that the participating teachers pursue students’ personal and social development by engaging them in genuine service activities. Teachers however, have difficulties in providing students with systematic preparatory and reflective activities before and after their involvements in community services. Nonetheless, this study demonstrates that students-led, genuine community services can contribute to enhancing students’ self-confidence and social skills, as well as in determining their future careers. Based on these findings, this study proposes that, to integrate service and learning more effectively, schools provide well-organized preparatory and reflective activities, while involving students in community services that are rooted in real needs.
