The purpose of this study is to explore and understand the experience of a young child from a multicultural family who participated in storybook reading activities through folktales of Korea and China, which is aimed at supporting the bilingual development of children from Korean/Chinese families. To accomplish the objective, the researcher carried out folktale activities using action research method, while observing and evaluating the reaction of participants. The research participants are one child (age 5) from a Korean/Chinese family and the mother (Chinese). For a total of 10 weeks, the researcher visited their home once a week and carried out folktale activities while observing them and conducting interviews. The research findings are as follows. First, at the initial stage of Korean-Chinese folktale activity, the child seemed unfamiliar with the mother's native language but expressed interest with some curiosity. Thus, the researcher decided to expand the participation of mother as a way to actively spark more interest of the child. Second, when the folktale activities were carried out based on emotional relationship between the child and mother through her participation, the child's interest in Chinese increased and so did the bilingual experience of the child in everyday life in a natural manner. Third, the child was able to sustain such bilingual interest by engaging in fairy tale-related synaesthetic plays, as well as simple folktale activities. Fourth, at the end of the activities, the child gained substantial experience in voluntary speech and expression in Chinese, the mother's native language, amid direct and indirect teaching of a teacher and support and encouragement from the mother.
