This study aims at exploring how the public design supports the visitors' needs in the outdoor space of museum in terms of Maslow's human needs theory. Literature review and physical observation were used with the questionnaire survey. Maslow suggested five steps of human needs including physiological, safety, belonging, esteem and self-actualization needs. Seoul national museum and Beijing national museum were selected to find out how the visitors were satisfied with the facilities of outdoor space of the museums which represent each country and analyzed in terms of Maslow's human needs. The results show that the visitors of Seoul national museum need sign system for safety need and symbolic art for identity, while the visitors of Beijing national museum need restroom for physical need, lighting facilities for safety need and shelter for social need. The facility design may be different based on culture and the country, but people have the same basic human needs according to the Maslow's theory. Therefore, Maslow's needs theory can be a useful method to analyze to understand the visitors needs' for facilities in museum outdoor space.
