Culturally-derived tourist souvenirs in Korea are too often unrefined and standardized. Most products we see in the marketplace are "made in China" with a hint of Korean cultural elements superficially imposed. Culturally-derived products possess much opportunity to convey added value through traditional craftsmanship by carrying Korean heritage into products. As such, here the proposed attempt is to apply 'Vernacular design' as an approach in cultural product development with grounded understanding of Korean culture and heritage. 'Vernacular design' is associated with native features embodied in everyday commodities where aesthetical functionality emerges as a response to people's daily life. At times there are 'traditional vernacular design' aspects we identify in native household tools or ergonomically refined farming tools. Other instances we see contemporary 'ready-made vernacular design' elements applied in examples such as a Horongbul made of grenades or traditional gourd dipper made of steel helmets.
It is important to understand these attempts not just as creative efforts impacting local development of Korean arts and crafts, but also as a way of expressing uniquely modern cultural interpretations within a global market.
