This paper will critically examine the understanding of Confucianism of Fukuzawa Yukichi(1835-1901), who was one of the leading enlightenment thinkers and is still highly regarded in Japan. He was born into a low-ranking samurai family. From an early age, he started to learn Chinese and developed some knowledge of Confucianism. Evidence for this can easily be found in his writings in which he often used Confucian terms when he introduced Western ideas or studies and when he translated new concepts into Japanese. Nevertheless, he took Confucianism as the biggest obstacle to the development of Japanese civilization, that is, westernization, and consequently attacked it throughout his life. He took this stance towards Confucianism because he only understood it in its pre-Tang dynasty form. He therefore failed to understand so-called Neo-Confucianism, which was formed after the Song Dynasty. He considered Japanese Confucianism during the Tokugawa period as the original form and did not know about Confucianism in China and Korea. This understanding of Confucianism led him to harbor negative perceptions about China and Korea. His famous essay "Datsu-A ron(Escape from Asia)" published in 1885 is directly related to his negative understanding of Confucianism.
There are various views on Fukuzawa but in terms of his perception of Confucianism, they are the same as that of Fukuzawa himself. One of the most significant examples is the understanding of Confucianism of Maruyama Masao, who has exerted great influence on the study of Fukuzawa.
