These days, people are looking for peace on an individual and societal level not from external, non-human factors such as machinery and materials, but from the spirituality that lies at the core of humanity. The meaning of spirituality today emphasizes practice rather than the soul, which has been talked about in the past. Life without practice cannot be called spiritual.
Spirituality is a behavior pattern that originates from an experience with the Absolute Spirituality (God). This behavior is called“ participatory spirituality”and encompasses the practice of spirituality in everyday life. This is clearly differentiated from mystical spirituality, which is based on mysterious religious experiences. Instead, participatory spirituality has the potential to become the foundation of a peace movement. Gandhi’s Ahimsa is a classic example.
Gandhi’s Ahimsa goes beyond a personal mystical experience, and instead aims at creating peace among states, nations, and all human societies. Ahimsa spirituality has been the base of numerous peace movements throughout history.
This thesis will delve into the relationship between Ahimsa and peace from the point of view of participatory spirituality. Especially, it will focus on Ahimsa as a form of participatory spirituality and how it can contribute to peace among individuals and societies. To accomplish this, I will review Gandhi’s Ahimsa as a form of participatory spirituality through the three aspects of Buddhism, “the essence of suchness (體),”“the attributes of suchness (相),”and“ the influence of suchness (用),”which can be found in the book, Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana (Mahayana-Sraddhotpadashastra) by Wonhyo (617-686). The three principles of Buddhism (體相用) explain how truth (體, essence) can be realized (用,influence) in the world; that is, how the mystical spirituality of essence (體)can also be the participatory spirituality of influence (用) and how these can interact with each other. In addition, through viewing the Ahimsa as a means toward its ultimate goal of peace, I will also use Gandhi’s Ahimsa as a hermeneutic study of how peace can solve direct and structural violence in modern society.
