본 연구에서는 한국교육개발원의 한국교육종단조사 1~5차년도 데이터를 사용하여 지난 5년간 학생들이 어떤 형태로 사교육비를 지출해왔는지를 LPAMS(Longitudinal Profile Analysis via Multidimensional Scaling) 모형을 적용하여 살펴보았다. This study tried to derive the longitudinal patterns of private tutoring expenditures using the first-year to fifth-year KELS (Korean Education Longitudinal Survey) data using the LPAMS (Longitudinal Profile Analysis via Multidimensional Scaling) model. The results indicated two prototypical profiles for English and Mathematics private tutoring, and one prototypical profile for Korean private tutoring.
Based on the similarity of individual student's profile to these prototypical profiles and their mirror profiles, students' longitudinal patterns of private tutoring expenditures from the 7th grade to 11th grade were classified into five groups for English and Mathematics. The group 1 which resemble the first prototypical profile can be interpreted as an ‘increase in expenses at 9th grade and then decrease afterwards’. The group 2 which resemble the mirror profile of the first prototypical profile can be interpreted as an ‘decrease in expenses at 9th grade and then increase afterwards’. The group 3 which resemble the second prototypical profile can be interpreted as an ‘increase in expenses at 10th grade and then decrease afterwards’. The group 4 which resemble the mirror profile of the second prototypical profile can be interpreted as an ‘decrease in expenses at 10th grade and then increase afterwards’. The group 5 consists of those who were unable to easily classified into any of the above groups. For the Korean, the students' longitudinal patterns of private tutoring expenditures from the 7th grade to 11th grade were classified into three groups, based on the similarity of individual student's profile to a prototypical profile and its mirror profile. The group 1 which resemble the prototypical profile can be interpreted as an ‘increase in expenses at 9th grade but decrease at 10th grade and then small rebound’. The group 2 which resemble the mirror profile of the prototypical profile can be interpreted as an ‘decrease in expenses at 9th grade but increase at 10th grade and then small decrease again’. The group 3 consists of those who were unable to easily classified into any of the above groups.
Finally, we examined whether the students' characteristics do differ based on these longitudinal patterns of students' private tutoring expenditures. The results showed that students with low family SES and coming from rural areas spend less money to the private tutoring and are also more likely to belong to group 4 in English and Mathematics and group 1 for Korean. These results seem to support our hypothesis that those with limited financial resources will decrease the private tutoring expenses when it's not urgent (such as 10th grade) and concentrate their limited input when it's urgent (such as the university entrance exam gets near at 11th and 12th grades).
