Wangji refers to documents from the king used in late Goryeo Dynasty and early JoseonDynasty among which approximately sixty documents exist at the present. Those remaining today are not only the important historic documents that provide empirical evidence of the regulatory system at the time, but also the valuable data that reveal the historic evolution of old documents. Nevertheless, related literature has been making use of Wangji without strict authenticity verification.
I propose the following four conditions for verifying the authenticity of Wangji: formalities for official document, its contents, royal seal, and materials. Specifically, the format of the document must be consistent with the systematic requirements at the time. Moreover, the royal seal on the document should be the one originally used at the time of printing. Finally, the calligraphic style applied in the Wangji and the component of transcript materials should also be analyzed.
Through specific case studies, I suggest that Park Gangsaeng Wangji, Go Bongryeo Seonji, Park So Gyoji, Nam Jae Wangji, and Nam Hoi Wangji are not authentic documents and that the authenticity of a couple of Goshin Wangji with the printed writing style are also doubtful requiring additional examination. Other than these, No Hyeok Wangji, Jung Jashin Wangji, Yi Jung Wangji, Yi Jingsuk Wangji, Yi Im Wangji, and Cho Seokyeong Wangji are believed to be authentic based on the regulation at the time and the accuracy of royal seal and hence they have significance in document history.
