Chae, Seoyoung. 2007. Debunking the Myth of "Majestic" Thou, the Archaic English Second Person Pronoun. Korean Journal of English Language and Linguistics, 7-4. 457-475. In Middle English, thou was the second person singular pronoun, whereas ye was its plural counterpart. Starting from the thirteenth century, however, another distinction developed: for the second person singular, thou became intimate and ye deferential. Although ye gained popularity and changed into the only second person pronoun of today you, thou has become completely obsolete in spoken English. Currently, thou is only found in biblical texts and poetry. Strange enough, however, many people believe that thou is more majestic and that it was the old deferential form. In particular, contemporary bible scholars oppose the change of thou into you in Bible modernization projects, since the change may lead to the loss of reverence and sense of holiness. This paper analyzes this misconception and attempts to provide an answer to how the reversal of the truth originated.
