There is a general tendency to separate religion from education in modern society. An obligatory religion education cannot help causing a collision and a social tension in our modern society, a society which thoroughly guarantees the freedom of the individual, a society in which various cultures and various religions meet each other. Religious education also has to change according to our recently changed society. As society changes, a pedagogy for religious education with a new sense of values must be put at the center of the change. It is a pedagogy for religious education which is based on autonomy and openness.
Today the typical religious education of the mission school, just the means for the missionary work of a particular religion, is no longer sufficient. This model is no longer helpful because it causes a negative effect, dislike and resistance to the religion itself. Today's religion education requires a new paradigm for pedagogy. In teaching religion the essence should not be a theoretical teaching about the faith of particular religion or missionary work, but rather a practical teaching of the existential faith itself. True faith is not a theoretical thing, but rather a practical thing that is based on spontaneity and autonomy. Above all, campus ministry, as an important part of religious education, must not overlook this spirit.
Also, if we want to accomplish good practical religion education, the pastoral care and concern for all professors and staff is necessary because they are frequently nearer to the students and with them longer, and thus give them great influence. Therefore, their aid is essential for successful religion education. Religious Education can bear fruit when teaching and life are well-integrated with one another, and when the teaching is not exclusive but rather is in accord with a universal moral value of mankind. All religions can truly find their own identity only when they break exclusivity and boundaries and overcome even themselves through trust, love and self-sacrifice. Only based on this conviction and philosophy can religion education get good results. From this new perspective we can find the clue for an alternative religion education that also helps us overcome the tensions and conflicts between the various cultures and religions of our society.
