The dialogues among religions have been developed mainly focused on Christianity and they have formed several types of approaches according to their conceptions on the other religions. The most outstanding types of dialogues among religions are Exclusivism, Comprehensivism and Pluralism. Since 1980s The ‘Religious-pluralism’ has initiated the dialogues. The Religious-pluralism is the hermeneutic approach originated by the western scholars who would accept the multi-religious status as it is without making any evaluation on it. The main idea of the hermeneutic approach of the religious-pluralists is to give the way for the individual religions to meet the other religions without hesitation. The major factor to be considered for this kind of meeting is the identity of each religion. How can each religion accept and overcome the differences of the other religions without losing its own identity? So, the Religious-pluralists suggest the solution for this issue by analyzing commonness and differences between the religions.
Lately, the Religious-pluralists emphasize on the salvation-oriented hermeneutic approach rather than Christ-oriented or God-oriented approach. Paul Knitter, John Hick and Michael von Brueck are the leading scholars in this group. They suggest the hermeneutic approach of the dialogues between the religions based on the ‘Salvation-oriented Pluralism’. Salvation is the ultimate goal of each religion and this can be the starting point and the criteria of dialogues. In this regard, there rise questions on ‘truth’ and ‘identity’. It is not available to start the dialogues without discussing on these questions. So, the Religious-pluralists build up the theory with concentration on ‘the criteria of the dialogues between religions’, ‘criteria of the truth’ and ‘the identity of the religions’.
The main purpose of this theses is to overview the ideas of Ilshim and Hwajeng of Wonhyo as one of the criteria for the dialogues between Buddism and other religions from the hermeneutic point of view, which has been developed mainly for the Christianity in the western countries.
This is to analyze how the Hwajeng idea of Wonhyo can contribute to the dialogues between religions as one of the hermeneutic approaches and if it can provide any way to the dialogues between religions in the future. This approach is meaningful in the sense of providing the different point of view from those of the western scholars. This is to provide the approach from the point of view of the traditional religion in oriental countries, Buddism, apart from the major stream of approach by the Christian scholars in the western countries. This trial is just started, expecting more active ‘hermeneutic studies on the dialogues between the religions’ based on the traditional religions in Korea to be followed.
