In recent years Korea Prosecution has attracted a great deal of attention for Victim-Offender Mediation Program based on the restorative justice, which provides a new paradigm in criminal justice policy. This Program is a voluntary process whereby the victim and the offender of the crime meet with a trained and impartial mediator in order to facilitate a prompt and effective resolution with an emphasis on repairing the harm from the crime.
In 2006 Korea Prosecution began to examine the pilot program at 4 District Prosecutors' Office. And in 2007, Korea Prosecution brings the regular Victim-Offender Mediation Program into practice whole of the country.
From April 2006, I have taken charge of the mediator in Victim-Offender Mediation Commission at Daejeon Center for Victim of Crime, which belongs to Daejeon District Prosecutors' Office. In this paper I survey the general outlook of Victim-Offender Mediation Program of Korea and describe the real picture of the process based on my own experience.
