The paper aims to examine the prospects for closer economic relations among China, Japan and Korea. Using the Grubel-Lyold Index, this paper reviews the industrial structural change and its related trade patterns in terms of intra-regional, intra-industry trade and the comparative advantages among these three countries. On the basis of our analysis, this paper highlights several key areas in trade facilitation and investments for enhancing trilateral economic relationships. In addition, the paper also provides an analysis of the development in the information and communication sectors (in view of their potential for sustained economic growth) in these three countries, and then offers some suggestions for cooperation among China, Japan and Korea in these sectors.
