The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of group counseling program based on positive psychology on the parenting stress and resilience of parents of disabled children. Through this, we intend to provide basic data for the development of psychological support programs and parent education programs for parents of children with disabilities. The research problems set according to the purpose of the study are as follows.
1. what is the effect of group counseling program based on positive psychology on the parenting stress of parents of children with disabilities?
2. what is the effect of group counseling program based on positive psychology on the resilience of parents of disabled children?
In this study, 12 parents or mothers of children aged 3 to 8 who were diagnosed with disabilities were assigned to the experimental group and the control group, respectively, among children using the M Language Psychological Development Center in U-si. A total of eight positive psychological group counseling programs were conducted for the experimental group twice a week for 90 minutes. To verify the effectiveness of the program, the experimental group and the control group were subjected to the Korean version of parenting stress scale (Jeon Hye-in, 2006) and the parents' resilience scale (Hong Eun-sook, 2007).
The data analysis procedure of this study is as follows. First, the Cronbach's α coefficient was calculated to analyze the reliability of the parenting stress scale and the resilience scale. Second, the Mann-Whitney U Test was conducted to verify the prior homogeneity of the experimental group and the control group. Fourth, in order to evaluate the appropriateness of the researcher's behavior and execution, the fidelity of intervention was also verified.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, group counseling program based on positive psychology was effective in reducing parenting stress of parents of children with disabilities. Second, group counseling program based on positive psychology had a positive effect on the resilience of parents of disabled children.
Based on the results of this study, it is required to efficiently implement a group counseling program based on positive psychology for parents of children with disabilities and to discuss various methods. In addition, follow-up studies on the development and implementation of psychological support programs and parent education programs for parents of children with disabilities are required.
