The purpose of this study is to study the effect of the 'Jabi-doryang Chambeop meditation program' on self-compassion, psychological well-being, and life satisfaction. While practicing penance mainly based on the several meditation techniques were added before and after to develop a program suitable for modern people and verify its effectiveness.
『Jabi-doryang Chambeop』is a process of repentance by going down to the Sang-geungi, Jung-geungi, Ha-geungi periods in the 'Samju-seol. and each period is made to repent. Repentance does not just end with repentance of one's past mistakes, but reveals one's mistakes in front of the Buddha and the Bodhisattva to reflect on them. Such repentance and admiration return the virtues of all living things by building virtue by throwing ochetuji.
In other words, through the 『Jabi-doryang Chambeop』, they repent of wrongdoing, build virtue and originate a new direction of life that is different from before. Repentance is a holy practice that pursues complete enlightenment which is the ultimate happiness.
『Jabi-doryang Chambeop』is composed of 10 books. The method of 『Jabi-doryang Chambeop』, is practiced one book a day for 10 days, or it is completed in three days in accordance with the 'Samjuseol'. Or, depending on the situation of each temple, it may be practiced over five or seven days.
This penance implies various and deep ideas of Buddhism, and helps participants read the penance together, call the names of Buddha and Bodhisattva, and confess through bows more than 1,800 times.
"Jabi-doryang Chambeop Meditation Program" attempted to develop a program suitable for modern people while enhancing the effect of penitence by adding penitence meditation and compassion meditation to the 『Jabi-doryang Chambeop』which has been handed down for 1,500 years.
Participants practiced 『Jabi-doryang Chambeop』while ochetuji, and then sat quietly and practiced a program to purify their inner karma through meditation.
The subjects of this study were 7 Buddhist from A temple located in Busan Metropolitan City, and the program was conducted for 3 to 4 hours every day from 1:30 p.m. for 8 days from March 10, 2022 (2/8 of the lunar calendar, the anniversary of becoming a monk) to March 17 (2/15 of the lunar calendar, nirvana anniversary). Prior examination was performed before the start of the program, and post-examination was performed after the program was terminated. The data analysis of this study used the SPSS 22.0 program, and the Wilcoxon's signed-ranks test was conducted along with the paired sample-test to verify the effectiveness of the program on self-compassion, psychological well-being, and life satisfaction.
The results of the study are summarized as follows.
First, 'Jabi-doryang Chambeop meditation program' was statistically significantly improved on self-compassion.
Second, 'Jabi-doryang Chambeop meditation program' was statistically significantly improved on psychological well-being.
Third, 'Jabi-doryang Chambeop meditation program' improved statistically significantly in life satisfaction.
Therefore, 'Jabi-doryang Chambeop meditation program' can improve participants' self-compassion, psychological well-being, and life satisfaction. If this program is used at the missionary site of each temple, it will be able to provide beneficial results to the believers by further enhancing the healing effect of penitence.
