The purpose of this study is to clarify the theological intentions of Paracletos on the basis of the conflict situation of Johannine community. For this purpose, this study investigated both the social context and the response of the Johannine community as reflected in the farewell discourse (Jn 14-16) in the Gospel of John.
This study focused on the various internal and external conflicts within the Johannine community including controversy of christology and Holy Spirit controversy. Through these controversies, this study attempted that there were various internal and external conflicts within the Johannine community and Gospel of John suggests the role of Paracletos with a theological intent.
Thus, this study summarizes the role of Paracletos in two ways. First, Paracletos clarifies that the Johannine community is the only community which knows the truth of God. This John's intentions are highly relevant to the circumstance of John's community, which has been persecuted from the outside. Johannine community was exiled from the Jewish synagogue around 80 CE. Through this experience, the Johannine community was required a new survival strategy. Therefore, they claim that there is no salvation in the synagogue, but only in the Johannine community.
Second, Paracletos' theological intention can be presumed to have united the internal groups of community together and attempted to eliminate the heretical ideology within the community through Paracletos' teachings. This can be understood that ministries of Paracletos(including teaches, reminds, and informs of future work) are all related to the linguistic activity. This shows that all of the activities mentioned as Paracletos' ministries all played a similar role. Therefore, teaching, reminding, and informing about future work can be seen as the purpose of teaching the right Johannine community's theology.
Through this discussion, it can be seen that through the ministry of Paracletos, the John community provided a basis for sustaining a firm faith without being greatly disturbed from the world's persecution. Based on this foundation, Johannine community would have developed their own theology and prevent the activities of heretical thought and to be one with the teachings of Jesus.
