The purpose of this study is 1) to look into the relation between private tutoring on english and mathematics and academic performance 2) to analyze the mediated effect of individual's academic interests in this process.
To accomplish the goals mentioned above, this study has set up assumptions as follows;
First, How is the mediated effect of academic interests to the relation between private english tutoring and academic performance?
Second, How is the mediated effect of the academic interests to the relation between private mathematics tutoring and academic performance?
An object of the study was chosen from 8th grade(second-year students in middle school) in nation(survey started in 2003 and follow-up survey to 2008) and 4th grade students in nation(survey started in 2004 and follow-up survey to 2008) and the object chosen is analyzed by their various traits and current condition.
Stratified multi-stage cluster sampling is used and 3,449 students were finally chosen who were picked and finalized through the survey's result in the first year of the study after allocating the targeted number of the object locally which was proportionate to the number of 8th grade students in total of twelve metropolitan cities and provinces.
The data used for the analysis for this study was from longitudinal data of K. Y. P. S(Korea Youth Panel Survey) from 4th year of panel of 4th grade students in elementary school and the number of the students for the analysis was 2,844.
The collected data, with a help of a program named PASW 18 and the other named AMOS 16, is analyzed as follows.
First, descriptive statistic and correlation analysis were conducted to find out the mean and standard deviation of the variables conducted in this study and relations in general.
Second, structural equation model was applied to judge the relevancy of the model to analyze the relation among variables and. Third, Sobel test was used to evaluate the mediated effect of parameter.
Through the process above, The results of this analysis are as follows;
First, private tutoring and academic performance shows significant correlation among all variables.
Second, correlation between private english tutoring and academic interests were partially significant and static. Correlation between private mathematics tutoring and academic interests was significant.
Third, mediated effect of academic interests in the relation between private tutoring and academic performance showed reliable after being examined.
As the study shows the form of private tutoring and academic interests show significant relation, the amount of private tutoring and academic interests did not however. In addition, private tutoring of both english and mathematics has static influence in common to academic interests and performance.
Establishing firm base on the discussion about the result of this study, the fact that more studies should be followed to increase academic interests of the students is realized.
