The purpose of this study is to find the effects of small group discussion play activity using stories on child's thinking power and language expressive power. With this result it also aims to be conscious of the importance of stories activity experience and to provide basic materials for children's language and thinking education through activation of discussion play activity.
The following research questions are established for the purpose.
1. What is the difference on child's thinking power whether doing small group discussion play activity after listening stories?
2. What is the difference on child's language expressive power whether doing discussion play activity after listening stories?
The subjects of this study were 10 children of age 5 at Y kindergarten located in Seochogu, Seoul(experimental group) and 10 children of age 5 at D kindergarten located in Yangcheongu(control group), the total were consisted of 20 children.
This study conducted pretest and posttest of experiment on thinking power and language expressive power test in the same way. The thinking power test used language thinking power test of Ju Young Hee(l982) and the expressive test used one picture material used by Lee Ji-yeon(1999) and No Yeon Soo(2000).
The stories used in research were made of total 7 volume and the small group discussion play activity be done 7 times. The data analysis proved the significance using ttest.
The results of this study are summed up as follows.
First, after listening stories, children of experimental group doing small group discussion play activity gained more scores on thinking power test than ones of control group doing not small group discussion play activity.
It showed that small group discussion was effective in subfactors of child's language and thinking powerskill based on sensory, analytic skill, total skill, reasoning skillat significant level.
Second, after listening stories, children of experimental group doing small group discussion play activity gained more scores on language expressive power test than ones of control group doing not small group discussion play activity.
It showed that small group discussion was effective in subfactors of child's language expressive powerthe number of words, sentences and contents composition of story.
