In the period of Chosun, discussions about painting were closely related to the Doctrine of Li and Ch'i(理氣論), a main idea at that time. Without mentioning the theory, it is impossible to describe the discussions. Jeonsin(傳神), saeui(寫意) and hyeongsa(形寫) frequently dealt with when discussing painting indicate that painting itself is the connection and expression of the mind under relations between li and ch'i.
When paintings of Mt. Inwang by Jung Sun and Kang Hee Eon have been compared and analyzed here on the Doctrine of Li and Ch'i(理氣論), one of the leading world-views throughout Chosun Dynasty, it is found that the two painters all followed the theory of ju-ch'i(主氣). But the two painters were different when li and ch'i implied in the paintings were analyzed. Jung Sun and Kang Hee Eon were not different in that both of them treated visible objects with their own sense which was related to li. The two painters saw the objects on the basis of their experiences. In other words, the two painters were similar in that they had not their own way of seeing objects. But they were different in that Jung Sun emphasized yeonseup and Kang Hee Eon, spontaneity in painting. This led to differences in revelations from the painting between the two painters.
In art, li is like a rule regarding how it should be. So Jung Sun had his own frame unlike Kang Hee Eon. Jung Sun was accustomed to the science of divination. He sought to unite himself with Mt. Inwang as he resided near the mountain. It suggests that the painter performed jeonsin in the image of Mt. Inwang. Through painting the mountain, Jung Sun sought to show up his own emotion(spirit) and ultimately reach the state of li. In his painting of the mountain, Kang Hee Eon suggested his realistic and objective views that he got through experiences as a government official and through exchanges with Kang Se Hwang and Kim Hong Do. He always selected a motive through a scientific observation of objective phenomena prior to painting. His work was an expression of the life force which was based on the Doctrine of Li and Ch'i(理氣論).
In conclusion, Jung Sun focused on the theory of ju-li that emphasized the spirituality of the Orient, while Kang Hee Eon had his own view that oriented the theory of ju-ch'i beyond previous ideas.
